15,889 photos.

That’s the number of photos I shot, captioned, and submitted for publication as a staff photographer at my former newspaper before going freelance. Why does this matter? Because it is an insane amount of photos which represent a lot of time spent shooting for the proverbial “Man.” It’s not a bad thing. In fact, shooting for The Man gave me ample time to learn, develop my vision, and figure out what didn’t matter to me and what did in my photography.

The newspaper was my first full-time newspaper gig, which I left last year to pursue my freelance career. In the matter of 8 years I made a lot of bad photos at bad assignments. I also made some great photos at great assignments. Making great photos from bad assignments? It was a challenge to myself. It’s not the newspaper’s fault that bad assignments exist, it’s just the nature of the grind at a daily newspaper – especially this day and age with dwindled staff and depleted resources. Most of your time is spent feeding the beast, churning out 2-4 assignments a day for prominent display in next morning’s recycle bin. It’s making Chicken Salad out of Chicken Sh*t. I’ve made my fair share of Chicken Salad.

Working as a staff photojournalist has its challenges. How do you stay inspired, happy, and passionate about photographing a white guy in a suit standing in front of a building? How can you make compelling images that give your photo subjects a voice in their own community when you can only stay for only 10 minutes? Why am I photographing this plate of food that barely resembles food? How do you make a picture that says “ribbon-cutting” without literally shooting the ribbon being cut?

Stricken with terminal illnesses, the elderly at Hospice Care Association have limited time left. Yet their spirits were high, their smiles wide, and their enthusiasms astounding as the SAJC Photographic Society visited them for an afternoon. This is their story for a day, the aged and alive.

Okay, this should be the final set of instructions I will give regarding the HCA CIP.

Date: 8 June

Time:1.30pm-4pm

Attire: Half-U (i.e a school-based shirt and school pants/skirt)

What to bring: For the interview group, paper and stationary, for the coverage group, cameras. Everyone is free to bring their cameras down though!

Location: HCA Hospice Care headquarters

We will meet at 1pm at Novena MRT before making our way there by bus. If anyone is going by car, please SMS Jac in advance.

This is what will happen on the day itself:

1) We will have to be briefed by the HCA people, so that would probably take half an hour.
2) We are going to have to introduce ourselves to the patients, about our school, why we are there etc. This will take around 15 minutes, give or take.
3) Next, we can start our simultaneous portrait shoot and interviews. The patients can have their photos taken by a team of photographers, while those not having their portraits taken can be interviewed. Students will be moving around with the patients. This will perhaps take an hour?
4) Finally, we can have games. Karaoke is flexible if we can get an internet connection, so we can probably sing for around half an hour or so. Bingo will probably take 20 minutes.

To facilitate this, everyone will be split into three groups:

Firstly, the Coverage group:
Leader: Ho Sung
What they will do: They will be the official photographers for the day. They will shoot both portrait photos as mementos for the patients and their families as well as take photos of the other members interacting with the patients. They will have to edit and manage their photo distribution and editing themselves.

Secondly, the Interact group:
Leader: Luan Ling
What They will do: These are the people who will be planning some games and activities for the patients, We will be having this game where we guess let the patients match us to our baby pictures, karaoke and Pictionary. I will bring down my laptop!

Finally, the Interview Group:
Leader: Jac
What they will do: HCA has suggested that we interview the patients around the theme of "happy memories", so I will prepare some generic questions to get the interviews going.

For those who attended meeting, you should already know your groups. For those who didnt attend meeting, you all are in the interview group. I will post the interview questions up here soon.

- All overdued borrowed items (Mem cards, remote & other stuff) to be returned by Tomorrow.

*** Extra things to take note of:

- If you're borrowing the school camera to shoot, please remember to take out the memory card and save it into your private computer or thumbdrive or whatnot. If there is any loss of photos when you leave it in the camera, there will be nothing we can do about it.

- Return all camera equipments and the memory card at the same time. (Memory cards latest to be returned one day after the camera is returned, or by the date stated in the log book.)

- Please do not take any school gear without signing out of the log book.

HCA phototaking: Photos as mementos and for a notebook.

Objectives to accomplish:
This session spent at HCA is to take pictures of the patients doing their activities such as interacting with the students etc. Also, students will also do interviews to learn more about the patients. The interviews and photos will then be edited after which they will be collated into a notebook. As you can see, we will be going down for around 3.5 hours, so HCA is hoping that we can do some other activities with them besides the phototaking, perhaps karaoke or Bingo.

Both Jac and Nikolas will sms you all instructions. Enjoys the start of the June Hols (?) Y'all! (:

Hey guys! So sorry, but saints advocates still hasnt given me the final details despite calls and such. Sigh. Anyway, hopefully they wont change the CIP day again...

WHAT: CIP at Hospice Care Association (HCA). We will be going down to shoot photos of the patients for a notebook HCA and the saints advocates plan to sell, and give them as nice mementos to the patient's families. All editing and shooting done by us, printing to be sorted by them.

WHEN: The 8th of june, a wednesday. They havent given us a time yet.

IS THIS COMPULSORY: Mdm ng would like it to be so, but as it is a holiday, I dont think its possible for everyone to go down. If you are free on that day, please do make the effort as this is a club activity. This includes the now-ex-seniors!

WHAT DO I GET: A nice thing for your SGC (Seniors will confirm if we can add this last minute) And possibly 7+ hours of CIP.

WHEN WILL I BE TOLD DETAILS: ASAP! Currently, HCA refuses to give saints advocates a final time, but the date should be set. I am harrassing them for details soon. Am so sorry that this is a mess. =_=
